Synopsis

Wealth Effect – During a 20-week course, freshmen at Sussex County Technical School are taking a financial literacy course enhanced with an educational game called the “Wealth Effect.” The game was created by teacher William Anderson who started his career in mortgage and personal banking. He came up with a fun but challenging way to address financial literacy when it became a graduation requirement in Sparta. He gives his students a paycheck based on their grade in the class. Expenses are based on where they choose to live and are due on a specific date, with a late fee assessed. Random, unexpected events like a car accident or inflation pop up and affect their finances. Students are also fined for unacceptable behavior like cell phone use in class and tardiness. Anderson has reached approximately 525 students which collectively amount to 80 percent of the student population at Sussex. He also is developing an app, with the help of the tech shop.
