Transformation and Remembrance – Thirty New Jersey educators take a journey across the ocean to visit the sites of the Holocaust. This is a story of unimaginable loss, transformation, and renewal. It’s a record of how the experience changed the lives of a group of educators, and how shared experiences can bring history to life for a new generation. The tour includes the Berlin Wall where the Topography of Terror museum is located, Wannsee Villa where the final solution was plotted, and a German School where educators from the two countries shared strategies for teaching the holocaust. Two of the more difficult stops were the Grunewald Station where about 50,000 Jews were deported to extermination camp, and the Concentration Camp Terezin, where notable musicians, writers, artists and leaders were sent for safe-keeping but instead 98,000 died, including 15,000 children. The educational tour, organized by Paul Winkler, led by Maud Dahme, and sponsored by the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education, is an effort to assure that Holocaust education in our state ranks among the best in the world.
