2018 Teacher of the Year
Synopsis
2018 Teacher of the Year – Sign Language Teacher Amy Andersen from Ocean City High School is the 2018 Teacher of the Year. Over 100 students take her ASL classes and many of them have gone on to careers in the field. Her students learn more than sign language, they are introduced to deaf culture and the importance of advocating for the deaf community. Currently Amy is focusing on early intervention for deaf infants. Amy and her students work with the family of a two-year-old deaf child who was isolated from all communications because both parents work full time and the day care could not meet his needs. Amy advocated for a paraprofessional who could teach the infant sign language. Now the two-year-old thrives and his mother and twin brother are also learning sign so they can communicate with the toddler.
