Choicetime – A team of teachers at Fernbrook Elementary in the Randolph Township School District, piloted a program that advances student learning through the use of cooperative play. With the support of their administration, the educators created Choicetime. In order to ensure that students collaborate, plan, problem-solve, and reflect within the allotted amount of playtime, they decided that Choicetime must be comprised of four stages: CHOOSE, PLAN, PLAY, and PROUD SHARE. The kindergartners plan what they want to play. They also have a Beautiful Things store full of things brought from home. Teachers at the full-day kindergarten program used research to determine that play is the best way to enhance their life skills and help with academic rigor.
